Menopause is defined as the time when menstruation has ceased. On average, it begins at 49 years of age. This means that if a woman lives into her 80's, she may spend a third of her life in menopause.
During menopause, there is a change in the balance of hormones. Estrogen levels decline. This shift in hormones may result in any of the following symptoms:
- Hot flashes
- Depression, irritability, mood swings
- Irregular, heavy, or light menses
- Disturbed sleep patterns
- Night sweats
- Decreased sexual desire
- Vaginal dryness
- Nausea
According to TCM theory, all these symptoms are related to ‘kidney deficiency’ because the kidney is the organ from which our primary energy comes. It stores essence that is closely related to our hormone system. It dominates the bones and is in charge of development and reproduction.
Therefore, the main treatment for menopause in TCM is to ‘boost the kidney’. Boosting the kidney clears the menopause symptoms and slows down the aging process. |
