Report about Xianling Gubao Capsule:
The Week in Review: Regenerx Wins China Patent - ChinaBio® Today
In other China biopharma news last week, Tongjitang China Medicines (NYSE: TCM) reported positive results from a two-year, western-style clinical trial of its traditional Chinese medicine for osteoporosis, Xianling Gubao (see story).
After six months of treatment, Xianling Gubao reduced bone resorption by 25% (the process of bone loss) and increased the bone density of the spine (the lumbar vertebrae L1) by up to 3.1%.
Without Xianling Gubao, the density loss in bone can be as much as 2% per year.
Tongjitang will use the data to support a request for FDA approval of Xianling Gubao, which Tongjitang believes is still three to five years in the future.
Synarc, the US-based company that specializes in radiology and biochemical biomarker clinical trials, conducted the trial from its Beijing office.

Effects of Xianling Gubao capsule on bone mineral density and cytokines in postmenopausal osteoporotic patients (Abstract)
Objective To study the effects of Xianling Gubao XLGB capsule on bone mineral density and cytokines in patients with postmenopausal osteopossis(PMO). Methods 178 PMO patients aged from 55 to 60 years were randomized in to three groups.
All of them received Leli capsules (calcium preparation) 1.0g/day. Group A, 62 patients, received XLGB capsules 1.0g, bid; group B, 66 patients, received livial 1.25 mg/day, group 50 patients received Lele capsules only. 20 women, 55-60(57.4 ± 3.54) years old, were recruited as normal controls.
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and measurements of a series of biochemical indices were performed before and after medication at 24 and 48 weeks.
Results After medication, BMD increased in XLGB and Livial groups, especially in femur (Total).
In Livial group, the levels of E2 increased rapidly (P < 0.01),while levels of IL-6, TNF-a and NTX decreased ( P < 0.01).
In XLGB group, no changes in levels of E2 occurred , while levels of IGF-I increased ( P < 0.01) ;the other indices were the same as in Livial group. In Leli group and control group, BMD E2 , ALP, BGP and IGF-I decreased ( P < 0.05), while levels of IL-6,TNF-α and NTX increased (P<0.05).
Conclusion XLGB significantly improves BMD as Livial does. Thus it plays an important role in the treatment of osteoporosis.
But calcium tablet can not prevent the loss of bone.
